Shamli, Uttar Pradesh – In a disturbing instance of technology misuse, a deepfake video of Samajwadi Party MP Ikra Hasan Chaudhary went viral on social media late Monday night. The AI-generated video, which quickly spread across platforms, was uploaded through a fake Facebook account named “Ikra Hasan Chaudhary MP” allegedly by two underage boys.
Swift Police Action on DGP’s Orders
The controversy erupted when one of the MP’s supporters, Imran Nadvi, took to X (formerly Twitter) and tagged Uttar Pradesh Police, sharing screenshots from the video. Responding swiftly, the DGP ordered the Shamli police to hand over the investigation to the cyber cell.
SP Shamli, Ramsevak Gautam, confirmed that a probe has been launched, and once the accused are identified, strict legal action and arrests will follow.
Public Apology Video Released
Amid growing outrage and to prevent further unrest, a village sarpanch from the Mewat region stepped forward and mediated a public apology. The minors involved were made to issue a video apology, which has now been released to the public. The video expresses regret on behalf of the entire Mewat community. The original viral video has also been taken down from social media platforms.
Fake Accounts a Growing Menace
This isn’t an isolated case. There are reportedly hundreds of fake accounts impersonating MP Ikra Hasan across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites. These accounts often use edited photos and videos to spread misleading or defamatory content.
Earlier, MP Ikra Hasan had submitted a list of such fake accounts to local law enforcement, but no significant action has been taken so far. This recent deepfake controversy has reignited concerns about the unregulated use of AI and the spread of misinformation online.
