Former Union Railway Minister and RJD chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav, has strongly criticized the railway administration following the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. Expressing his sorrow over the incident, Lalu Yadav described the event as deeply unfortunate and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. He blamed the chaos on railway mismanagement, stating, “This is a result of the poor handling of railway operations, which led to the loss of so many lives. The Railway Minister must take accountability. There is no significance to Kumbh; it is futile.”
The stampede, which occurred late Saturday night, claimed the lives of 18 people. Following the incident, the railways have initiated an investigation to determine the causes and lapses that led to the disaster.
Compensation Announced for Victims
In the wake of the tragic incident, Indian Railways has declared compensation for the affected families. The families of those who lost their lives will receive Rs 10 lakh each. Seriously injured passengers are set to receive Rs 2.5 lakh, while those with minor injuries will be given Rs 1 lakh.
Railway authorities have also provided operational updates to assure passengers. By 6 AM on Sunday, 71 trains had been dispatched, carrying over 1.60 lakh passengers. On Saturday alone, 339 trains were operated, facilitating the travel of more than 14.76 lakh individuals. Railways further assured that all scheduled services are proceeding without disruption, and additional special trains have been introduced to accommodate the increased demand. Moreover, unreserved trains are being run based on passenger requirements.
Railway Minister Expresses Condolences
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav expressed his profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the stampede. Offering his sympathies to the bereaved families, he stated, “I am deeply pained by the unfortunate stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost their loved ones. We are fully committed to supporting the affected individuals.”
Cause of the Stampede
The tragic incident unfolded on platforms 13 and 14 of New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night. It is believed that rumors regarding the cancellation of two trains bound for Prayagraj triggered panic among the waiting passengers, leading to the deadly stampede.
In response, the Railways swiftly arranged four special trains to ease congestion on the overcrowded platforms and ensure passenger safety.
