Kapil Sibal Questions India’s Capability in Prolonged War With Pakistan; Criticizes Modi Government

New Delhi: Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has sparked controversy with his recent remarks suggesting that India might not have been able to decisively defeat Pakistan had a war between the two nations escalated further. His comments have drawn sharp criticism from several quarters, particularly supporters of the current government.

Earlier, Sibal had written a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), reportedly seeking to take the case of the Pahalgam terror attack to an international court—an unusual move that drew attention for its diplomatic implications.

Sources close to the BJP allege that Sibal is frustrated with the Modi government’s crackdown on terrorism and its handling of national security. Critics claim that the legal opportunities for defending accused terrorists—once a lucrative area—have diminished due to the government’s policy of direct and uncompromising action against terrorism.

Moreover, the resolution of key national issues such as the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir has, according to some political commentators, reduced the political relevance of certain ideological positions traditionally held by opposition parties.

Political analysts also suggest that Sibal’s recent statements could be seen in the context of internal party dynamics and his political alignment with the Congress and Samajwadi Party, particularly with regard to potential Rajya Sabha nominations.

While his critics accuse him of being sympathetic to Pakistan, Sibal has not responded to these allegations as of yet.
