Significant changes have been introduced regarding SIM card issuance rules in India. In a bid to tackle rising cyber fraud cases, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed telecom companies to adopt a digital integrated verification system for issuing SIM cards.
Stricter Verification to Curb Cybercrime
The government is taking robust steps to curb cyber fraud. Now, telecom operators must conduct rigorous verification checks before issuing SIM cards to customers. The new rules emphasize a stricter verification process compared to the existing system.
Biometrics Mandatory for SIM Card Issuance
According to the latest guidelines from the Telecom Department, no SIM card will be activated without biometric verification. This measure aims to eliminate fraudulent connections and ensure the authenticity of every SIM card holder.
Multiple Connections Under Scrutiny
Telecom operators will also be required to check the number of SIM cards registered under a single individual’s name. Additionally, if a customer holds SIM cards under different names, this will be flagged and investigated further to prevent misuse.
Enhanced Photo Verification Process
As part of the new verification norms, customers will have to submit their photographs taken from 10 different angles. This step aims to enhance identity verification and reduce the chances of fake identities being used to acquire SIM cards.
Government’s Crackdown on Fake SIMs
The Department of Telecommunications has already blocked 2.5 crore fake SIM cards across the country as part of its ongoing drive to combat fraud. These new regulations are expected to further strengthen the security framework and prevent unauthorized SIM card issuance.
With these updated rules, individuals applying for new SIM cards should be prepared for a more detailed and secure verification process to ensure their identity is genuine.
