After the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the search for his successor has intensified across the country. The Election Commission has already released the schedule, and with the NDA holding a comfortable majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the alliance is expected to secure victory with ease. The key question now is: whose name will the BJP and its allies endorse?
Until recently, several administrative and political figures were in the running. Now, the name of a prominent Jat leader has emerged, adding a new twist to the political equation — Acharya Devvrat.
Front-runners in the race
Among the earlier contenders, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Jammu & Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha were seen as leading names. Saxena’s hands-on administrative style and active role in the national capital have kept him in the spotlight, while Sinha’s deep political connections in Uttar Pradesh and eastern India could help the BJP achieve regional balance.
However, Acharya Devvrat, currently serving as the Governor of Gujarat, has now entered the discussion. Hailing from Samalkha in Haryana, he belongs to the same Jat community as Dhankhar — a factor that could help the BJP send a positive message to Jat voters. Known for his association with the Arya Samaj and his long tenure as principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Devvrat carries a strong ideological profile. He has also served as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
The Harivansh factor and Bihar politics
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is also in contention. His strongest advantage is his Bihar connection, especially with the state assembly elections scheduled for later this year. Both the BJP and its ally, JD(U), could leverage his candidature to strengthen their position in the state. Known for his composed demeanor and extensive political experience, Harivansh could potentially emerge as a consensus candidate.
Final decision rests with PM Modi
Key NDA allies such as JD(U), TDP, and Shiv Sena have already authorized Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put forward a name, promising their full support. Sources suggest that the BJP may announce its candidate between August 18 and 20. All eyes are now on Delhi, where the chosen nominee will not only become the next resident of the Vice President’s House but could also shape the political messaging and electoral strategy for the 2025 elections.
