Airtel’s Groundbreaking Undersea Cable: A 21,700 km Milestone in Global Connectivity

Airtel has made a remarkable achievement by laying a 21,700 km long undersea cable, surprising everyone in the telecom industry. As India’s second-largest telecom company, Airtel has successfully linked two major countries to India through this cutting-edge undersea internet cable. This extensive network stretches from Chennai to Singapore and extends further to Marseille, France. Additionally, on December 30, 2024, Airtel connected South Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe by deploying another undersea cable from Mumbai. The newly laid cable is expected to be fully operational by next year, revolutionizing internet connectivity.

Department of Telecommunications Shares Key Information

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) officially announced this development via its X handle. According to the DoT, this new undersea cable will establish a robust internet link between India, Singapore, and France via Egypt. It boasts a staggering data transmission speed of 220 terabits per second (TBPs), significantly enhancing India’s global internet capacity.

Through this technological feat, Airtel has efficiently connected two major Indian metros—Mumbai and Chennai—with Western Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. The company has also established state-of-the-art data centers in these metropolitan cities, operated by Nxtra, Airtel’s data center division.

Global Connectivity Across Five Continents

With this monumental project, Airtel has successfully linked all five continents through its undersea cable infrastructure. The company has laid an impressive 34 undersea cables worldwide, bridging connections across Africa, South Asia, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Beyond India, Airtel has solidified its position as a leading telecom operator in Sri Lanka and multiple African nations.

Airtel Business Director and CEO Sharat Sinha expressed his enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “We are thrilled to further strengthen our global connectivity by launching one of the largest undersea cable systems. This initiative enhances our existing network capacity of 400,000 hyperscale route kilometers across 50 countries, ensuring seamless connectivity for users worldwide.”

This groundbreaking project marks another significant step in Airtel’s vision to enhance global digital infrastructure, bridging continents with high-speed internet and fostering technological advancements.
