Water Taxis to Operate in Yamuna: NCR Planning Board’s New Proposal

The NCR Planning Board has put forth an ambitious proposal to introduce water taxis in the Yamuna River. This initiative aims to enhance water transport connectivity and boost tourism in the National Capital Region (NCR). The board recently discussed this plan in a meeting with state secretaries from NCR, outlining the proposed water taxi route and designated stations.

Proposed Water Taxi Route and Stations

According to the NCR Planning Board, the water taxi route will stretch from Delhi to Noida, with designated stations at key locations. The proposed stops include Madanpur Khadar, Film City, Nizamuddin, and ITO in Delhi. A proposal has already been submitted to the Inland Water Transport Department to facilitate the project. Each water taxi is expected to carry 20-25 passengers, providing an efficient and scenic mode of transportation while promoting tourism in the region.

Infrastructure and Water Level Requirements

Officials have highlighted the need for maintaining a water level of 1 to 1.2 meters in the Yamuna to ensure smooth operation of the water taxis. Additionally, developing a suitable riverfront infrastructure is crucial for both transportation and tourism purposes. Before launching the service, a comprehensive water survey and traffic study will be conducted from Delhi to Noida. Talks are also underway with the Delhi government to ensure seamless execution of the project.

A Step Towards Cleaning the Yamuna

During previous elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party had pledged to clean the Yamuna River. The water taxi project is being viewed as a significant step towards fulfilling this promise. Implementing water transport will not only enhance connectivity but also contribute to the river’s cleanliness by fostering maintenance initiatives.

Next Steps and Project Implementation

To advance this project, the NCR Planning Board has requested detailed reports and project documentation from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The board has also sought a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to assess feasibility and plan further actions. If successfully implemented, this initiative will mark a revolutionary shift in NCR’s transportation landscape, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative for commuters and tourists alike.
