TRAI New Mobile Number Change Guidelines released

TRAI New Mobile Number Change: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently issued new recommendations for amendments to the National Numbering Plan. The main objective of these recommendations is to improve the availability and management of telecom numbering resources. This may lead to some changes in the mobile number system, which will directly affect millions of consumers. Let us know about these guidelines in detail.

TRAI New Mobile Number Change Guidelines

TRAI has suggested that the existing 10-digit number for machine-to-machine (M2M) connections be changed to a 13-digit number. This move will increase the availability of mobile numbers and meet future needs.

Its main impact will be on consumers connected to smart devices, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and automation services. TRAI has suggested that the prefix ‘0’ should be made mandatory for calling from landline to mobile number. That is, if you are calling from landline to mobile number, then now ‘0’ has to be dialed first.

This will make a clear distinction between mobile and landline numbering and will enable proper management of numbering resources. TRAI has also proposed that if a mobile number remains inactive for 90 days, it should not be closed immediately.

Effect of TRAI New Mobile Number Change

  • Consumers with M2M services will have to replace their existing 10-digit numbers with 13-digit numbers.
  • People making calls from landlines to mobiles will have to adopt the new system.
  • Old and inactive mobile numbers will be better utilized.
  • Spam and fraudulent calls will be reduced, which will increase user security
