Advanced Technology to Safeguard Farmers’ Crops from Weather Changes
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) has introduced a cutting-edge technology to protect farmers’ crops from unpredictable weather conditions. This innovative method will provide farmers with real-time updates on hailstorms, unseasonal rains, and extreme temperature fluctuations. As a result, they can plan their harvesting, planting, and crop protection accordingly. The pioneering system has been developed by Dr. Monica Kundu, a scientist in the Division of Agricultural Physics.
In a special conversation with Dr. Monica Kundu, she explained that farmers across the country are being connected through WhatsApp groups and a dedicated website. These platforms ensure that crucial weather updates are delivered to farmers one to two weeks in advance, helping them prepare effectively for any climatic changes.
Collaboration with the Meteorological Department
Dr. Monica Kundu emphasized that her department is working in close coordination with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This collaboration allows them to receive weather updates well in advance, typically one to two weeks before any significant changes occur. Her team then updates this information on their official website, www.iari.res.in, as well as on regional WhatsApp groups to keep farmers informed in real-time.
Local-Level WhatsApp Groups for Accessibility
Recognizing that not all farmers may be comfortable navigating a website, the IARI has established localized WhatsApp groups. Each group is managed by a designated regional officer who disseminates weather updates to nearby farmers. This initiative ensures that even those unfamiliar with online platforms can receive timely information. Additionally, farmers are being trained to use WhatsApp efficiently so they can make the most of this advisory service.
How Farmers Are Benefiting from This Initiative
Dr. Monica Kundu highlighted that farmers across the country are rapidly joining this network. The initiative is progressing swiftly, with more farmers being connected daily through both the website and WhatsApp groups.
With this system in place, farmers receive instant notifications about weather conditions such as incoming rainfall, extreme cold or heat waves, and other significant climatic changes. This allows them to make informed decisions about their crops, mitigating potential losses due to adverse weather conditions.
The ultimate goal is to integrate all farmers across the nation into this hi-tech system, ensuring they are well-equipped to tackle unpredictable weather challenges. Dr. Kundu envisions a future where every farmer in India can access real-time weather updates, safeguarding their livelihood and boosting agricultural productivity.
