Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal exchanged vows on June 23, 2024. Their marriage became a hot topic on social media due to their different religious backgrounds—Sonakshi being Hindu and Zaheer following Islam. Amidst speculations, rumors surfaced that Sonakshi might convert to Islam for the marriage, but this did not happen. The couple legally registered their union without any religious conversion, making their relationship official. Now, eight months after their wedding, they have finally addressed the topic of religion in their marriage.
Their Perspective on Religion in Marriage
Sonakshi and Zaheer’s interfaith union was widely discussed last year. While they openly shared their love story and their family’s reactions, they never spoke about religious differences—until now. Sonakshi recently revealed that religion was never an issue between them, nor did either of them ever consider conversion.
‘We Respect Each Other’s Faith…’
In an interview with Hauterfly, Sonakshi discussed the role of religion in their marriage. She said, ‘Religion was never a factor for us. We are simply two people in love who wanted to marry, and we did. He has never imposed his religion on me, and I have never imposed mine on him. We never even felt the need to discuss religion. Instead, we embrace and appreciate each other’s cultural backgrounds. His family has certain traditions, and so does mine. We respect each other’s customs, and that is what truly matters.’
Why They Chose the Special Marriage Act
Sonakshi also explained why they opted for a legal marriage under the Special Marriage Act, which allows individuals of different religions to marry without converting. She said, ‘For us, the best decision was to marry under the Special Marriage Act. This way, I remain a Hindu, and he remains a Muslim, while we continue to love and respect each other. There was never a question of conversion. Our love is all that matters.’
A Love Story That Began in 2017
Sonakshi and Zaheer have been together for seven years. Their wedding date, June 23, 2024, holds special significance as it marks the anniversary of when they first started dating in 2017. To celebrate their journey, they hosted a grand celebration with close friends and family. Sonakshi shared an emotional post announcing their marriage, writing, ‘Seven years ago, on this very day (23.06.2017), we found love in each other’s eyes and decided to hold onto it. Today, that love has carried us through every challenge and triumph, bringing us to this moment. With the blessings of our families and faiths, we are now husband and wife.’
