The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been struggling with declining influence following its loss in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, has now suffered another blow. A significant rebellion has emerged within the party as its councillors have broken away and formed a new political faction. Under the leadership of Mukesh Goyal, the breakaway group has officially launched a new party called the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
New Party Formation Following Internal Discontent
The development comes after a major shake-up in the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) last month. During the MCD elections, the BJP’s councillor Raja Iqbal Singh was elected as the new mayor, securing 133 votes. In contrast, Congress candidate Mandeep received only 8 votes, while AAP chose to boycott the mayoral elections and did not field any candidate. This move of AAP triggered significant discontent within the party ranks.
Now, Mukesh Goyal, a senior leader from AAP and the former leader of the house in the MCD, has led the breakaway, with reports confirming that 15 councillors have resigned from AAP. Mukesh Goyal announced that he and his supporters have decided to forge a separate path, and the new party formed will be called the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
A New Political Shift in Delhi
According to Goyal, the new faction will include 15 councillors who will now officially join the Indraprastha Vikas Party. This development is seen as a significant political challenge for AAP, especially in the context of Delhi’s municipal governance. Several of these leaders, including Mukesh Goyal and Hemchand Goyal, were formerly members of the Congress party before they joined AAP ahead of the last MCD elections. Goyal was even fielded by AAP as a candidate in the Assembly elections for the Adarsh Nagar constituency.
The formation of this new party has created a ripple in Delhi’s political landscape. With AAP’s dominance in the city’s politics now under scrutiny, the emergence of this new faction could potentially alter political dynamics in the upcoming municipal and assembly elections.
AAP’s Internal Struggles Intensify
So far, AAP has not issued any official statement on the defection, but sources within the party have revealed that the leadership is deeply troubled by the rebellion and efforts are underway to address the situation. It is expected that the leadership will make attempts to resolve the issue and prevent further cracks within the party.
The formation of the Indraprastha Vikas Party marks a fresh chapter in Delhi’s political scene. It will be interesting to see how this new faction strengthens its political presence in the MCD and whether it can pose a serious challenge to AAP’s influence in the region. Political analysts are closely watching these developments, as they could significantly impact Delhi’s future political alignments.
