Authorities have recovered 265 bodies following the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad. Among the deceased, 241 were passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft, while 5 victims were residents of the medical college hostel on which the plane crashed.
The aircraft went down on the hostel building of BJ Medical College, where more than 50 people were present at the time. Tragically, four MBBS students and the wife of a doctor lost their lives in the incident. However, over 45 students were safely evacuated from the site, according to Dr. Mehul Shah, President of the Gujarat chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
Flight Recorder Found Amid Debris
In a critical development, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has recovered the aircraft’s Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the wreckage. An ATS official confirmed that a forensic team will soon arrive to examine the recovered data, which could provide key insights into what caused the crash.
PM Modi Visits Crash Site and Hospital
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ahmedabad on Friday morning. He first inspected the crash site and then went to Civil Hospital, where he spent around 10 minutes meeting with the injured and grieving families.
Flight AI-171 Crashed Moments After Takeoff
The ill-fated flight, Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner AI-171, took off from Ahmedabad airport at 1:38 PM on Thursday, bound for London. Just two minutes after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed, resulting in one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent memory.
Onboard were 230 passengers from multiple nationalities:
- 169 Indians
- 53 British nationals
- 7 Portuguese citizens
- 1 Canadian
The manifest included:
- 103 men
- 114 women
- 11 children
- 2 infants
In addition, 12 crew members were on board.
One of the most high-profile casualties was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in the crash. Amazingly, only one passenger survived the tragic accident, whose identity has been confirmed but withheld for privacy.
