Ambient Photonics is reshaping the future of renewable energy by introducing a groundbreaking technology that powers small electronic devices using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This innovation builds on the basic concept often used in high school science experiments, where berries are used to create simple solar cells, but Ambient Photonics has elevated it to an industrial scale.
In its Scotts Valley, California-based facility, the company manufactures large sheets of glass that are converted into highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells through an automated assembly process. These cells are powerful enough to power a range of small devices such as remotes, sensors, digital shelf displays, and even keyboards, like those recently released by Lenovo.
Tackling E-Waste and Reducing Battery Dependency
The growing problem of electronic waste (e-waste) is a global concern, with an alarming 62 million tonnes of e-waste generated worldwide in 2022 alone. Ambient Photonics’ DSSC technology offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative. CEO Bates Marshall emphasizes that their solar cells produce 90% less carbon dioxide compared to conventional batteries, contributing to a reduction in environmental impact.
These innovative solar cells are designed to mimic the process of photosynthesis, where a dye absorbs light and acts like chlorophyll, releasing electrons to generate energy. A unique feature of these cells is their ability to produce power even in low-light environments, making them perfect for indoor applications.
A Revolution in Small Device Power Solutions
While solar cells were previously used in small devices like calculators during the 1980s, their energy generation was limited. Today, Ambient Photonics’ DSSCs generate three times more energy, making them viable for everyday consumer electronics, including mice, remotes, and digital shelf displays. By replacing traditional batteries, this innovation reduces logistical complexities and helps decrease the environmental “footprint” of these devices.
Overcoming Economic and Supply Chain Challenges
One of Ambient Photonics’ goals is to bring the cost of its solar cells in line with traditional battery technologies. To achieve this, the company has focused on local manufacturing to minimize the impact of global trade issues, such as tariffs arising from the ongoing trade tensions between China and the U.S.
Currently, Ambient Photonics is ramping up production at its first facility, with plans to produce millions of solar cells and scale up to billions of units by 2026. The company has already started fulfilling orders, including the first batch supplied to Lenovo, along with several other large customers.
