Mumbai, May 29 — Sad news has emerged from the Mukherjee household as filmmaker and music composer Rono Mukherjee, uncle to Bollywood actress Kajol, director Ayan Mukerji, and actress Tanishaa Mukerji, has passed away. His death has left the entire family and members of the film fraternity in mourning.
Rono Mukherjee, who led a quiet life away from the limelight, was known for his limited but meaningful work in the Indian film industry. Despite directing only two films — Hawayein and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi — his creative contributions remain appreciated by those close to him. Notably, he also composed the music for Tu Hi Meri Zindagi, showcasing his multifaceted talent.
Final Rites Attended by Family and Industry Colleagues
Rono Mukherjee’s last rites were held in Mumbai, where close family members and several prominent figures from the entertainment world gathered to pay their respects. Among those present were actress Tanishaa Mukerji and director Ayan Mukerji, who is the son of Rono’s late brother, Deb Mukherjee.
This marks a second tragic loss for the family in a short span, as Deb Mukherjee passed away earlier this year during the Holi festival, further deepening the family’s sorrow.
A Legacy Rooted in Cinema
Though Rono Mukherjee maintained a low public profile throughout his life, his roots in Indian cinema run deep. He hailed from the illustrious Mukherjee-Samarth film family, one of Bollywood’s most respected lineages. His cousins include notable names such as Ram Mukherjee (father of Rani Mukerji), Shyam Mukherjee, Geetanjali Mukherjee, Subhash Mukherjee, and Sanjay Mukherjee.
Despite his preference for a life away from the public eye, Rono Mukherjee’s quiet dedication to his craft and his family’s rich cinematic legacy have left an indelible mark. His passing signifies the end of an era for one of Bollywood’s foundational film families.
The industry mourns not just a filmmaker, but a member of a generation that helped shape the world of Indian cinema behind the scenes.
