BSNL, the only public sector telecom company in India, has introduced a revolutionary service that allows its customers to make calls without using a SIM card. The company launched its first-ever internet telephony service on Wednesday, enabling users to connect with any network across the country through its ‘Wings’ mobile app.
Internet Telephony Service Launched
During the launch event, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha praised BSNL for enhancing its market presence despite stiff competition. He highlighted that internet telephony operates on next-generation technology, facilitating both voice calls and data services.
Traditionally, app-based calling required both parties to use the same application. However, with the ‘Wings’ app, users can now make calls to any mobile or landline number in India. This innovative service works over any Wi-Fi connection or internet network, regardless of the service provider. The Telecom Commission had granted BSNL the license to offer internet telephony services just a month before the launch.
International Calling Facility
BSNL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Anupam Shrivastava, revealed that the ‘Wings’ app can also be used by customers from abroad to call any Indian number. This feature makes the app a convenient tool for those traveling internationally or living overseas.
BSNL Embracing Technological Advancements
Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha urged BSNL to stay prepared for rapid technological advancements and strive to reclaim its position as a leading telecom operator in the country.
The service is powered by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which allows voice calls through an internet connection. With VoIP, mobile numbers function like website addresses, and callers are identified using Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. Through the ‘Wings’ app, users can place calls to both mobile and landline numbers seamlessly.
The introduction of BSNL’s internet telephony service is expected to boost the company’s revenue and strengthen its market share. This innovative step marks a new chapter in the Indian telecom sector, providing customers with greater convenience and connectivity.
