The central government has clearly rejected the demand to cancel the censor certificate of a controversial film. This appeal was made by Deoband madrasa operator Maulana Arshad Madani and Kanhaiyalal murder case accused Mohammad Javed. Both had claimed that the content of the film can promote religious tension and division in the society, so its screening should be stopped.
Government’s stand
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting clarified that the certificate issued by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is valid and in accordance with the rules. The ministry said that the film has been approved under the censor board process and there is no basis for cancelling it. The government also reiterated that maintaining freedom of creative expression is the basic principle of democracy.
Appeal rejected in court too
Earlier, the Supreme Court had also commented in another case that courts cannot become a forum for appeal on certificates given by the censor board. This approach applies to the present case as well, which makes it clear that the demand to ban the screening of the film was not accepted at the judicial and administrative levels.
