New Delhi, July 2025 — A fresh political and religious controversy has erupted after Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav visited a mosque near Parliament without wearing a traditional head covering. The visit, which included other SP leaders including her husband Akhilesh Yadav, has drawn sharp criticism from sections of the Muslim clergy and political opponents.
🕌 Cleric Issues Fatwa Over Attire
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, issued a fatwa condemning Dimple Yadav’s appearance inside the mosque. He stated that her lack of a burqa or dupatta violated the sanctity of the religious space and hurt Islamic sentiments. The cleric demanded a public apology from Dimple and accused the SP of turning a sacred place into a political venue.
🔥 Political Firestorm
The BJP Minority Morcha also joined the criticism, alleging that the SP held a political meeting inside the mosque and that Dimple’s attire was inappropriate. Photographs from the visit showed her seated without a headscarf, which BJP leaders claimed was disrespectful.

In response, Akhilesh Yadav and Dimple Yadav denied the allegations, stating that the gathering was social, not political, and accused the BJP of using religion to divert attention from real issues like national security and governance.
🗣️ Reactions and Counterclaims
- SP leaders defended the visit, saying it was hosted by Imam and SP MP Mohibullah Nadvi, and that no formal meeting took place.
- BJP leaders threatened to hold a counter-event at the same mosque, beginning with the national song and ending with the national anthem.
- Maulana Razvi called for Nadvi’s removal as Imam, accusing him of politicizing a place of worshi.
