Fastag Refund Process: Steps to Follow if Excess Toll is Deducted

If you’ve experienced excess or incorrect toll deductions from your Fastag account, there’s no need to worry. The government has introduced strict regulations to protect consumers, ensuring you can get a refund promptly by filing a complaint.

Heavy Fines Imposed on Toll Operators

In response to such issues, the Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has penalized toll operators in approximately 250 cases for wrong or excess deductions. Each violation has resulted in fines of ₹1,00,000 imposed on the responsible operators.

Significant Reduction in Toll Errors

Following these strict penalties, the number of incorrect toll deductions has reportedly decreased by around 70%. Considering that nearly 30 crore transactions are conducted monthly via Fastag, this action has significantly improved accuracy. Out of these transactions, only about 50 complaints are now received per month.

Common Reasons for Excess Toll Deductions

Several factors can cause incorrect deductions, including:

  • Double Deduction: Sometimes, the toll amount is deducted twice for the same journey.
  • Incorrect Vehicle Identification: System glitches may result in the wrong vehicle being identified, leading to deductions for vehicles that never crossed the toll plaza.
  • Wrong Entry by Toll Staff: Errors by toll operators may result in deductions even when a vehicle hasn’t passed through the toll.
  • Excessive Fee Charges: Occasionally, a higher toll charge than the specified route or vehicle category may be imposed.

How to Get a Refund for Incorrect Toll Deductions

If you notice an incorrect toll deduction, you should immediately file a complaint. The IHMCL will investigate the matter, and if confirmed as an error, the refund will be processed promptly.

To prevent future incidents, toll operators found responsible for these mistakes are fined ₹1,00,000 per violation, ensuring better accountability.

How to File a Complaint

If excess toll is deducted from your Fastag account, follow these steps:

  2. Email Complaint: Send your complaint to falsededuction@ihmcl.com.
