New Delhi – In a significant move set to revolutionize highway travel in India, the government is preparing to launch a FASTag Annual Pass that will allow vehicle owners to drive toll-free across the country for just ₹3,000 per year. The initiative aims to simplify toll payments, eliminate long queues, and reduce travel-related stress and expenses.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is finalizing a comprehensive plan to introduce barrier-free tolling across India. With this upcoming scheme, drivers can opt for an annual pass that grants unlimited access to national highways, state expressways, and toll roads without needing to pay each time they cross a toll plaza.
What Is the FASTag Annual Pass?
The FASTag Annual Pass is expected to be priced at ₹3,000 per year, offering a flat-rate system for toll payments. Once subscribed, users can enjoy seamless, unrestricted access to highways across the country—no stopping, no cash payments, no scanning QR codes at every toll point.
Two New Payment Models Under Consideration
As part of the larger reform, the government is also considering a dual payment model:
- FASTag Annual Pass – A one-time yearly payment of ₹3,000 for unlimited travel across toll roads.
- Distance-Based Pricing – For less frequent travelers, this model proposes a charge of ₹50 per 100 kilometers traveled.
This approach offers flexibility to both regular highway users and occasional travelers.
Existing FASTag Users Need Not Worry
For the millions already using FASTag, there’s good news—no additional paperwork or new registrations will be required. Existing accounts can simply be upgraded to activate the annual pass. The entire process is being designed to be user-friendly and hassle-free.
Lifetime FASTag Scheme Cancelled
Earlier, the government had proposed a Lifetime FASTag scheme, priced at ₹30,000 for 15 years of toll-free travel. However, that plan has now been scrapped. Instead, the focus is on the more accessible annual model, which is expected to appeal to a broader section of vehicle owners.
Speed, Savings, and Simplicity
Beyond cost-saving benefits, the new FASTag system is aimed at reducing traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and travel time. With sensor-based identification and automated toll deductions, vehicles will no longer need to halt at toll plazas. The rollout of barrier-free tolling infrastructure is expected to greatly enhance the driving experience on Indian highways.
When Will the Scheme Launch?
While an official launch date is yet to be announced, MoRTH is in the final stages of consultations. Discussions are ongoing regarding compensation mechanisms for highway operators and increased operational roles for banks. Once consensus is reached, the scheme could be rolled out nationwide in the near future.
