Government’s AGEY Scheme Empowers Rural Entrepreneurs with Interest-Free Loans

New Delhi – The central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, continues to promote self-employment and entrepreneurship through various welfare initiatives. One such impactful scheme is the Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana (AGEY), which aims to improve rural transport infrastructure while encouraging economic self-reliance.

Launched in 2017, AGEY provides interest-free loans of up to ₹6.5 lakh to members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs). These loans allow SHG members to purchase vehicles and operate affordable and safe transport services in underserved rural areas.

Part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission

AGEY operates under the broader umbrella of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM). The initiative supports SHGs in backward regions by enabling them to manage and run road transport services. The goal is to not only generate income but also address the lack of reliable connectivity in remote villages.

How the Scheme Works

Under the scheme, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) that fall under DAY-NRLM utilize funds from the Community Investment Fund (CIF) to support SHG members. CBOs can provide up to ₹6.5 lakh in interest-free loans to individual beneficiaries for purchasing a vehicle.

Alternatively, the CBO itself can retain ownership of the vehicle and lease it to the SHG member, who then operates the service. The leasing arrangement ensures the CBO receives a rental income while supporting local employment.

Each vehicle funded under AGEY is painted in a standardized color scheme and features branding specific to the scheme. This branding helps distinguish them from other commercial vehicles and ensures they operate within designated routes.

Spreading Awareness Through Digital Outreach

To ensure the scheme reaches its target audience, the government regularly promotes AGEY through public awareness campaigns. The Ministry of Rural Development has been actively using social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), to inform citizens about the benefits and eligibility of the scheme.

AGEY stands as a powerful example of how grassroots empowerment, financial inclusion, and rural connectivity can converge to drive sustainable development in India’s hinterlands.
