Haryana Government Announces Installation of Smart Electricity Meters in Two Phases

The Haryana government has unveiled a significant plan to modernize the electricity metering system across the state. The initiative aims to improve power management and reduce losses by introducing smart electricity meters in a phased manner.

Smart Meters to Be Installed in Two Phases

According to the government, the rollout of smart meters will occur in two distinct phases. The initial phase will focus on installing these advanced meters in government offices, official buildings, and residential properties occupied by state employees. Following the successful implementation of the first phase, the second phase will extend the installation of smart meters to households of the general public.

Announcement by Union Energy and Urban Development Minister

Union Energy and Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar provided details about the project. He emphasized that the first phase would prioritize the installation of smart meters in government establishments and employees’ residences. Minister Khattar highlighted that this transition to smart metering is a crucial step toward minimizing L&T (Losses and Thefts) issues across the nation.

Benefits to the Electricity Department

The introduction of smart meters is expected to offer substantial advantages to the electricity department. These devices will enhance accuracy in electricity billing, reduce power theft, and improve overall efficiency in power consumption monitoring. Furthermore, states seeking to introduce prepaid metering systems independently will be granted the flexibility to do so.

Prepaid Metering Plan Faced Resistance

In the context of Haryana, there was previously a proposal to implement prepaid electricity meters. However, the plan encountered opposition at various levels, leading to its deferment. With the shift towards smart metering, the state government is aiming to address concerns and enhance electricity distribution management.

This strategic move is set to bring greater transparency, reduce energy losses, and modernize the power infrastructure across Haryana.
