India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate, Russia Backs India on Terrorism

Tensions between India and Pakistan have reached a critical level. With fears of a possible Indian retaliation, Pakistani leadership appears anxious and is actively seeking support from its allied nations. Countries like China and Turkey have reportedly extended support to Pakistan, while India has received strong backing from Russia on the issue of terrorism.

Russia Affirms Support to India in Fight Against Global Terrorism

Amid growing regional tensions, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko met with Indian Ambassador Vinay Kumar to express Russia’s commitment to cooperate with India in combating global terrorism. In a post on social media platform X, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated, “Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko met with Indian Ambassador Vinay Kumar. Russia confirmed its readiness to jointly combat the global terrorist threat with India.”

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed ongoing bilateral matters, the schedule of upcoming political engagements, and the overall situation in South Asia—especially in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Deadly Pahalgam Terror Attack Claims 26 Lives

The diplomatic engagement follows a tragic terror attack that occurred on April 22 near the popular Baisaran Valley tourist area in Pahalgam, where 26 people, including one Nepali citizen, were killed. This attack is one of the most lethal in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack, in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were martyred.

India Responds: Visa Restrictions on Pakistani Nationals

Following the Pahalgam attack, the Indian government has taken a firm stance by cancelling all categories of visas issued to Pakistani nationals, effective April 27, with the exception of long-term, diplomatic, and official visas. Medical visas will remain valid only until April 29.

UN Chief Calls for De-escalation

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has also intervened, speaking separately with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in strong terms and emphasized the need for justice through legal channels. Guterres expressed serious concern about the rising tensions between India and Pakistan and warned against any escalation that could lead to tragic consequences. He offered the UN’s support to help de-escalate the situation.
