Iran on Israel; Jordan Plays Key Role in Interception

Tel Aviv: In response to recent Israeli military actions, Iran launched a series of drone attacks targeting Israel. However, all the drones were successfully intercepted by Israeli and Jordanian defense forces. Jordan, a close regional partner of Israel, played a significant role in neutralizing the threat. This is not the first time Jordan has stepped in—last year as well, it intercepted several missiles and drones aimed at Israel.

Jordan’s assistance is especially notable given its majority-Muslim population. King Abdullah II of Jordan is widely regarded as a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, lending a unique dimension to his cooperation with Israel.

Iranian Drones Shot Down Over Syria and Jordan

According to Israel’s public broadcaster, Iranian drones were intercepted while flying over Syrian airspace. Jordan’s state news agency reported that its military took down several drones and missiles that entered its airspace early in the morning. These projectiles, launched by Iran, were headed for Israeli targets but were neutralized mid-air. As a precaution, Jordan also temporarily closed its airspace to avoid further escalation.

“Our Airspace Will Not Be a Battleground”

Jordan issued a strong statement, declaring that it would not allow its skies to be used for warfare and would not tolerate any violations of its territorial integrity. This statement comes amid growing tensions between Iran and Israel. Geographically, Jordan is wedged between Israeli-controlled territory to the west and Iraq—an Iranian ally—to the east, making its airspace strategically vital in any regional conflict.

Historic Alliance with Israel

Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, becoming the second Arab nation to do so. Since then, the two countries have maintained deep intelligence and security ties. Jordan is also a key ally of the United States. These alliances have positioned Jordan as a critical buffer and partner for Israel during periods of heightened conflict.

King Abdullah II: A Rare Muslim Leader Supporting Israel

King Abdullah II of Jordan is among the few Muslim leaders who have openly supported Israel in times of military tension. During last year’s missile barrage from Iran, Jordan was the only Muslim-majority country to publicly confirm its assistance to Israel. In October alone, Jordan intercepted over a dozen of the 180 missiles Iran fired at Israel. Despite facing domestic and international criticism, King Abdullah stood by his decision to aid Israel.

Abdullah has ruled Jordan since 1999, succeeding his father, King Hussein. He belongs to the Hashemite dynasty and is considered by many Muslims to be a 43rd-generation direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.

A Modern Monarch

King Abdullah II is known for his progressive views and modern lifestyle. Educated in the UK and the U.S., he graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1980. He has served in both the British and Jordanian armed forces and held key military leadership roles, including commander of Jordan’s elite special forces.

He is often seen as a reform-minded leader aiming to modernize Jordan. His wife, Queen Rania, and their daughter are known for embracing a contemporary lifestyle—neither of them is seen wearing traditional veils in public. Queen Rania is also a prominent global figure working in education and public health. She has represented Jordan on international platforms such as the Harvard Kennedy School, the Skoll Foundation in the UK, and the Jeddah Economic Forum, promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding.
