Divorce cases are a common occurrence in Jaipur, with family courts regularly handling petitions and delivering verdicts. However, a recent case has captured public attention as the most expensive divorce in the city’s history. This middle-class couple’s separation resulted in a staggering settlement of ₹1.22 crore, making it the costliest divorce in Jaipur to date. Although the case had been ongoing for several years, the court finalized the divorce in just one day.
Mutual Consent Leads to Swift Court Decision
Family Court lawyer Advocate D.S. Shekhawat revealed that the couple appeared in Family Court No. 3 at Gandhi Nagar Mode, Tonk Road, Jaipur, on February 5. Both parties mutually agreed to divorce, with the financial transaction forming a crucial basis for their settlement. Typically, courts grant a six-month period for reconciliation, allowing couples to reconsider their decision. However, since the petition had been filed eight years ago and both parties were in agreement, the court immediately approved the divorce.
From a Happy Marriage to Separation
According to Advocate Shekhawat, the husband hails from Jaipur, while the wife is from Chandigarh. They entered into an arranged marriage in 2002 with their families’ consent. Initially, they lived together in Jaipur, later relocating to Malaysia due to the husband’s employment with a multinational company. Despite living together in Malaysia for several years, marital disputes arose, leading to their return to India. The couple has two daughters, aged 18 and 22. Their relationship deteriorated in 2015, and they started living separately. In 2017, the husband filed for divorce.
Seven-Year Battle Over Alimony Settlement
Although the husband filed for divorce in 2017, the wife refused to consent, citing financial concerns. As she had custody of their two daughters, she demanded a substantial alimony for their maintenance. The financial disagreement prolonged the case for seven years. Eventually, both parties agreed to a ₹1.22 crore settlement, with the husband providing two demand drafts totaling the agreed amount. On their mutual consent, Family Court Judge Vinod Kumar Giri officially approved the divorce, bringing an end to the prolonged legal battle.
