In response to a directive from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), major telecom operators in India—Jio, Airtel, VI, and BSNL—have slashed the prices of their calling + SMS-only tariff plans. The move follows TRAI’s recent order to introduce specific plans for users who do not require data services, ensuring they don’t have to pay extra for features they don’t use.

Jio’s Revised Plans: More Affordable Options

Jio has updated its prepaid plans, making them more cost-effective for users seeking calling and SMS services only. The popular prepaid plan priced at Rs 458 has now been reduced to Rs 448, offering unlimited voice calls and 1,000 SMS with a validity of 84 days. Additionally, Jio’s annual plan, which was priced at Rs 1,959, is now available for Rs 1,748, offering unlimited calls and 3,600 SMS over the course of one year.

Airtel Follows Suit with Price Cuts

Airtel also adjusted its calling + SMS-only prepaid plans following TRAI’s review. The plan priced at Rs 499 for 84 days has now been lowered to Rs 469. This plan provides unlimited calling and 900 SMS. Airtel’s annual plan, previously priced at Rs 1,959, is now available at Rs 1,849, offering unlimited calls and 3,600 SMS over a one-year period.

VI and BSNL’s Plan Revisions

VI: VI has made significant adjustments to its plans as well. The 84-day plan now costs Rs 470, offering unlimited voice calls and 900 SMS. For those seeking a one-year plan, VI now offers a Rs 1,849 plan that provides 3,600 SMS and unlimited calls.

BSNL: BSNL’s tariff plans have also been revised. A Rs 99 plan offers 300 SMS and unlimited calling with a 17-day validity. Another option priced at Rs 439 provides 300 SMS and unlimited calling for 90 days.

TRAI’s Efforts to Provide Affordable Options

TRAI’s intervention came after users previously had to pay for data services even if they only needed voice calls and SMS. With the new calling + SMS-only tariff plans, users now have the option to choose plans that suit their needs, without unnecessary data charges. This move is expected to offer significant relief to many users who no longer require mobile data services but still want affordable calling and SMS options.
