The government has clarified that it is mandatory for all PAN card holders to link their PAN with Aadhaar by 31 December 2025. This rule is very important especially for those who file Income Tax Return (ITR) or whose bank account is active. If linking is not done by the due date, the PAN card will be deactivated and all financial work related to it may be disrupted.

What will be the effect if the PAN card is deactivated?

  • You will not be able to file ITR
  • You will not be able to open a new bank account
  • Transactions in the existing account may stop
  • Using PAN as a financial document can attract a fine of up to ₹ 10,000
  • This fine can be imposed under section 272B of the Income Tax Act

How to do PAN-Aadhaar linking? Know the easy process

  • Go to the official website of Income Tax www.incometax.gov.in
  • Click on “Link Aadhaar” in the “Quick Links” section
  • Fill your PAN number, Aadhaar number and mobile number in the new window
  • Select the “I validate my Aadhaar details” option
  • An OTP will come on your registered mobile number, fill it
  • Click on “Validate”
  • If a penalty is applicable, the linking process will be completed after payment

Bank accounts also affected

People who have bank accounts, but their PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, the transaction process in their accounts may be disrupted. In many cases, accounts may also be temporarily closed, due to which customers may face problems.
