New Zealand MP Exposes the Dark Side of Deepfake Technology in Parliament

With the rapid pace of technological advancement, it often feels like nothing is beyond human capability anymore. However, as innovation accelerates, it seems that humanity’s ethical compass is struggling to keep up.

In a powerful and unsettling moment, New Zealand Member of Parliament Laura McLeod McLure recently exposed the darker side of AI by confronting the misuse of deepfake technology—right on the floor of Parliament. In a bold move, she presented an AI-generated nude image of herself—a completely fake and fabricated creation.

“This is a naked image of me,” she told the assembly. “But it’s not real.”

Speaking about the emotional toll and broader implications of deepfake content, she added, “For victims, it’s humiliating and deeply traumatic. Even knowing it wasn’t real, holding that image in my hand in Parliament was horrifying.”

Laura later shared the same image on her Instagram account, accompanied by a powerful message:
“Today, I showed Parliament an AI-generated nude image of me to highlight how real these can look—and how frighteningly easy they are to create. The issue isn’t with the technology itself, but in the way it’s being abused to harm people. Our laws need to urgently catch up with this new digital reality.”

Her statement has reignited global conversations around digital ethics, AI misuse, and the urgent need for legislation that protects individuals from being targeted by malicious technological manipulation.
