As the summer season intensifies, Pakistan has ramped up its attempts to infiltrate terrorists and carry out attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, a trend that typically escalates during these months. The recent attack in Pahalgam is part of this surge in aggression. While tourists have traditionally not been targeted in the past, this time, the situation has changed. In response to this rising threat, Prime Minister Modi has already demonstrated India’s strong military resolve through surgical strikes and airstrikes, sending a clear message to Pakistan that any attack will be met with swift retaliation. Consequently, following the Pahalgam attack, a noticeable calm has descended in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with the Pakistani army retreating into their bunkers and staying out of sight. In response, India has issued a red alert along the Line of Control (LOC), further heightening tensions in the region.
Ceasefire Violations and Heightened Tensions
This month, Pakistan’s military broke a ceasefire that had been in place for four years along the LOC. They initiated multiple firing incidents in a single day, prompting a swift and firm response from the Indian Army. According to intelligence reports, Pakistan has since issued a high alert along the entire LOC. This alert was declared immediately after their ceasefire violations, signaling heightened concerns over potential retaliation. Pakistani forces have been instructed to remain cautious and avoid exposure to open areas, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
Pakistan’s Fear of Retaliation
The Pakistani military is on edge following multiple attacks, including the bombing of a tourist bus in Jammu and a series of terrorist strikes. There is a palpable fear within Pakistan that India may respond with cross-border raids or surgical strikes, as seen in the past following heightened provocations. This anxiety has led Pakistan to issue a high alert across both the LOC and the International Border (IB). The 10th Corps of the Pakistani Army, which is responsible for the defense of PoK, has even increased its troop numbers in anticipation of potential confrontations.
India’s Strong Military Presence and Response
The Indian Army maintains a robust and vigilant presence along the LOC on a daily basis, but the issuance of a red alert has further intensified security measures. Reserve forces have been placed on standby, ready to be deployed if the situation demands. This heightened state of alert has been a common feature during moments of increased tension, such as during the Uri surgical strike and the Balakot airstrike, both of which saw the LOC and IB placed on red alert.
In conclusion, as tensions between India and Pakistan continue to simmer, the situation along the LOC remains volatile. With Pakistan on high alert, the Indian Army has bolstered its defenses, preparing for any potential escalation. The recent events underscore the precarious nature of the region and the delicate balance of military preparedness that both nations must navigate.
