Amid growing tensions with India, Pakistan is now trying to garner international support through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Recently, Pakistan expressed concern about the current situation in South Asia before the OIC and described India’s recent actions as a “serious threat” to regional peace.
OIC diplomats meet in New York, Pakistan’s active participation
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said during the meeting of OIC countries in New York that India’s steps are “provocative, politically motivated and destabilizing”. He urged member countries to seriously consider India’s policies and their possible adverse consequences.
OIC’s support and emphasis on Kashmir issue
According to the report of The Express Tribune, OIC representatives expressed solidarity with Pakistan and appealed to reduce tensions in the region. He specifically mentioned the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and called for finding a solution to it through peaceful means on the basis of UN Security Council and OIC resolutions.
Pakistan’s stance: Warning of strong response
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif recently held a meeting on the security situation in the country. They reiterated the need to give a “strong and accurate response” to any possible action against India. This meeting was the first meeting of the two leaders after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, in which 26 people were killed.
Talk of contact and transparency with Qatar
Pak PM Shahbaz Sharif also spoke to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Sani on this issue and expressed his willingness to cooperate in a “transparent investigation” of the terrorist attack in India. He stressed the need for regional stability and dialogue.
