Now, getting a passport won’t just be quicker — the entire process will also become more secure and efficient. The Ministry of External Affairs’ Passport Division is preparing to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) across various stages, from police verification to document scanning. Technologies like biometrics, advanced data analytics, and chatbots will be integrated with AI systems. Thanks to these upgrades, a passport that currently takes about 30 days to process could soon be issued within just 15 days.
AI to Ensure Accurate and Swift Verification
To improve accuracy in verification, AI-powered tools will be deployed for automatic document scanning and validation. When applicants submit forms and documents like Aadhaar cards, birth certificates, or address proofs, AI systems will scan and authenticate them. These tools will scrutinize fonts, signatures, barcodes, and other security elements to confirm the genuineness of the documents. If discrepancies such as incorrect names, wrong birth dates, or incomplete entries are detected, applicants will be immediately alerted to make corrections. This new system will significantly cut down the reliance on manual verification. Additionally, machine learning models will help identify fake documents, tampered photographs, counterfeit signatures, or altered barcodes. AI will also streamline the appointment booking process at Passport Seva Kendras.
Digital and Automated Police Verification Through AI
The police verification process, which has traditionally been time-consuming, will now be expedited with AI integration. The new system will be connected to the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems) database. Using AI, the applicant’s details — including name, address, and Aadhaar number — will be cross-checked against national crime records and flagged if any suspicious activity is detected. Unlike manual verification methods, AI can analyze extensive data within seconds, leading to a faster, more reliable background check for passport issuance.
