Sadhvi Ritambhara, a prominent figure during the Ram Mandir movement and an accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case, has been honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award for her contributions to social work. Known for her fiery speeches and leadership, Sadhvi Ritambhara played a pivotal role in mobilizing support for the Ram Mandir movement, inspiring both men and women to join the cause.
A Key Figure in the Ram Mandir Movement
During the Ram Mandir movement, Sadhvi Ritambhara emerged as a powerful voice, urging Hindus to set aside social divisions and unite for the cause. Alongside Uma Bharti, she became one of the most dynamic female leaders of the movement. Her speeches resonated with millions, motivating large numbers of women to join the movement and participate in Kar Seva.
Her oratory skills and commanding presence made her a standout figure. Audio cassettes of her speeches were widely circulated, played in temples, and broadcasted in public spaces, amplifying her influence during this significant period.
Early Life and Journey to Sainthood
Born as Nisha Kishori in Mandi Dauraha village, Punjab, Sadhvi Ritambhara grew up in a poor family. Her journey took a transformative turn after a personal incident during her youth. In an interview, she shared that her mother reprimanded her for her friendship with two tenant boys, which led to her leaving home in anger.
She found refuge in Haridwar, where she joined the ashram of Swami Parmanand. Under his guidance, she gained spiritual knowledge and honed her public speaking abilities. This marked the beginning of her spiritual journey, and she later joined the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) as a spokesperson.
Controversies and Legal Battles
In 1991, at the age of around 25, her speeches were so influential that they were banned, and legal action was initiated against her by the Delhi Police. She became a central figure during the Babri Masjid demolition on December 6, 1992. While many leaders attempted to pacify the Karsevaks, Sadhvi Ritambhara did not intervene. This made her a key accused in the Babri demolition case. However, in 2020, she was acquitted of all charges by the CBI court.
Recognized for Social Work
Despite the controversies surrounding her, Sadhvi Ritambhara’s contributions to social work and her role in uniting communities have been recognized with the Padma Bhushan Award. Her recognition highlights her enduring influence and dedication to social causes.
