Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh – July 21, 2025: In a deeply disturbing case from Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, a man allegedly entered into a relationship with his own niece, impregnated her, and later married her in a local temple in an apparent attempt to avoid legal action.
The incident took place in the Sumerpur police station area, where a young girl had been living with her maternal uncle (mama) after the untimely demise of her parents. The girl, having no other guardians, was raised in her maternal family. However, what followed has shocked the community and stirred strong reactions.
Uncle Turns Predator, Marries Niece to Avoid Prosecution
According to police reports and local sources, the girl’s maternal uncle, who was supposed to act as her guardian, developed illicit relations with her over time. These encounters ultimately resulted in the girl becoming pregnant.
As soon as the pregnancy became known, the family was thrown into turmoil, and the matter was reported to the Sumerpur police. Fearing arrest and public shame, the accused uncle offered to marry his niece, presenting the marriage as a solution in front of family members and village elders.
Shockingly, despite some opposition from within the community, many family members agreed to the proposal, and the man went on to fill his niece’s hairline with vermilion at a local temple — a ritual that symbolized marriage.
“Mutual Settlement” in Police Presence Raises Eyebrows
Upon reaching the police station, the pregnant girl’s complaint led to an immediate investigation. But once it was revealed that the accused was her own uncle and she had been living with him, the family pressed for a compromise through marriage rather than pursuing criminal charges.
According to Sumerpur Station House Officer (SHO) Anup Kumar, both parties expressed consent to the marriage. Following this, a settlement was reached, and the wedding was solemnized in a local temple under the watch of both family members and police.
Community Reactions: “This Is a Mockery of Relationships”
While the families agreed to the arrangement, not everyone accepted it. Many villagers and social activists have condemned the incident, calling it a “murder of moral values and sacred relationships.” Some residents questioned the legality and ethics of such a marriage, particularly when criminal elements and power dynamics are involved.
The case has sparked widespread debate on exploitation under the guise of guardianship, with calls for a deeper investigation into such incidents where women — especially minors or orphans — are vulnerable to abuse by their own relatives.
As of now, no formal criminal charges have been filed due to the “mutual understanding” reached by both parties, though concerns remain over whether justice has truly been served in a case that has deeply shaken societal norms.
