Social Media Influencer Sharmistha Panoli Granted Interim Bail by Calcutta High Court in Communal Video Case

Social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli has received interim relief from the Calcutta High Court after being arrested for allegedly posting a communal video online. The court granted her interim bail, while also issuing a directive prohibiting her from leaving the country until further notice.

Arrested from Gurugram by Kolkata Police

Sharmistha was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police in Gurugram for allegedly uploading a video containing communal remarks. Earlier in the week, the court had rejected her initial bail plea during a hearing held on Tuesday.

Court Demanded Case Diary Submission

Two days ago, the Calcutta High Court instructed the Garden Reach police station to present the complete case diary concerning Sharmistha’s arrest. The court also advised the West Bengal government not to register any new FIRs against her based on the same incident.

Allegations Against Sharmistha Panoli

Previously, a lower court in Kolkata had remanded Sharmistha to judicial custody until June 13. The influencer had made remarks related to “Operation Sindoor” and also allegedly posted a video containing objectionable comments about Prophet Muhammad. These actions led to charges of hurting religious sentiments and using offensive language online.

High Court’s Latest Decision

While her earlier request for interim bail was denied, the Calcutta High Court has now reversed that stance, granting her temporary release. The court acknowledged that her statements were offensive and hurt religious sentiments, but still allowed bail under certain conditions, including a ban on international travel.
