New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticized the Indian government for its silence and inaction on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In a sharp statement, she said that India’s current position amounts to being a “mute spectator to a grave insult to humanity.”
Sonia Gandhi highlighted how several Western nations are taking active steps in response to the Gaza situation. “France has decided to recognize the State of Palestine, and countries like Britain and Canada have imposed sanctions on Israeli leaders who have escalated aggression in Gaza,” she said. “It is a matter of national shame that India has become a mere observer in this humanitarian crisis.”
She further expressed concern over the Indian government’s departure from the nation’s traditional values of non-violence and justice. “In the face of the Gaza humanitarian crisis, the government has abandoned the moral compass that has guided India’s foreign policy. Our silence is not neutrality—it is complicity,” she asserted.
Referring to the events of October 2023, Gandhi condemned the indiscriminate bombings, killing of civilians including women and children, and the widespread destruction in Gaza. “Instead of opposing these atrocities, the Indian government has aligned itself with the oppressors,” she said.
Sonia Gandhi stated that the international community is now recognizing the suffering in Gaza, while the Indian government is failing to raise its voice. “This silence by our government is not in line with India’s history, values, or principles. It will be remembered as a dark chapter in our diplomatic conduct,” she added.
Her remarks come amid growing global condemnation of the Gaza violence and increasing calls for India to take a clear and morally upright stand.
