Surat, August 7, 2025 — What began as a Friendship Day celebration quickly turned into a police case in Gujarat’s Surat, as a woman partying with her friends was caught in a hotel room during a surprise police raid — all after her father-in-law tipped off the authorities.
The incident unfolded in the Dumas area of Surat, where local police raided a room at the ‘Weekend Address’ hotel following a tip-off that liquor was being served illegally. Gujarat, being a dry state, has strict laws prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcohol.
Inside room number 443, officers found four men and two women, aged between 23 and 25, reportedly indulging in a liquor-fueled gathering. All six were arrested on the spot, and a partially consumed liquor bottle along with four glasses were seized as evidence.
According to a report by the Times of India, the surprising twist in the case is that the informer was none other than one of the girls’ father-in-law. The woman, reportedly in a dispute with her husband, had chosen to celebrate the day with her friends — unaware that her in-laws were keeping a close watch.
Police say the father-in-law decided to “teach her a lesson” after discovering her hotel plans. He followed her discreetly and, upon confirming her presence at the party, called the police control room and exposed her activities.
When officers arrived, they found the group visibly intoxicated. Both women involved were reportedly artists by profession, while the men are said to be businessmen. The group had rented the hotel room specifically to celebrate Friendship Day.
All individuals were taken to a civil hospital for blood alcohol testing, which confirmed alcohol consumption. Legal proceedings have been initiated against all six for violating Gujarat’s prohibition laws.
The bizarre mix of personal vengeance and law enforcement has sparked conversation online, highlighting the complex social dynamics and strict prohibition norms still enforced in parts of India.
