This is the story of late Captain Somesh Srivastava, an Indian Army officer who tragically lost his life in an accident. His wife, Riya Nehra, faced immense grief but chose to transform her pain into purpose, achieving something extraordinary.
Riya and Somesh had a love marriage, and their life together was filled with happiness. However, when Somesh’s untimely demise shattered her world, she was left devastated. Despite the emotional turmoil, she decided to take charge of her life and make a difference.
Riya Nehra Joins the Indian Army
Determined to honor her husband’s legacy, Riya resolved to join the Indian Army. Her decision met with resistance from her family, but she remained steadfast. In March 2002, she joined the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. After completing her training, she graduated in September and proudly donned her husband’s stars on her shoulders.
Riya was assigned to the Ordnance Corps in Delhi. As a short-service commission officer, she dedicated herself to her role. Although her tenure ended in 2007, she chose to extend her service for another year, eventually retiring as a captain in October 2008.

Following her retirement from the Indian Army, Riya embarked on a new journey as an entrepreneur. She now runs her own business while cherishing life with her daughter. Reflecting on her time in the army, she shared that completing her mandatory service in 2007 was a milestone, but choosing to serve an additional year was a deeply personal decision.
