However, a shocking case has emerged from Muzaffarnagar, revealing an alarming misuse of the pilgrimage for criminal activity.

Gang Impersonated Devotees to Steal from Kanwar Camps

In a significant breakthrough, the Civil Lines police in Muzaffarnagar have arrested five individuals—identified as Suhail, Sherkhan, Asif, Abid, and another Asif—for allegedly disguising themselves as Kanwar pilgrims to infiltrate service camps and steal from genuine devotees.

According to police reports, the accused altered their religious identity and attire, adopting Hindu names and appearances to blend in with the Kanwar pilgrims. Once inside the Kanwar camps, they would steal valuables and create disturbances, allegedly aiming to disrupt the peace and hurt religious sentiments.

Caught Red-Handed at the Scene

Law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspects were apprehended on July 14, while they were in the act of attempting to steal from a Kanwar camp. Acting swiftly on intelligence, the police detained all five men at the crime scene. Following their arrest, they were sent to jail pending further investigation.

Gangster Act Invoked Against the Accused

Addressing the incident, Muzaffarnagar SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma stated that the police are treating the case with utmost seriousness. “We are now initiating action under the Gangsters Act against all five accused,” he confirmed.

The case has raised concerns about security loopholes during religious gatherings, and authorities are now tightening surveillance across all camps to prevent similar incidents. The incident also serves as a stark reminder of how criminal elements may exploit faith-based events, prompting calls for increased vigilance and public cooperation.
