Where Are the Most Children Born in India? Here’s What the Data Says

Before diving into which region in India sees the highest number of childbirths, it’s important to understand a broader trend: India’s fertility rate is steadily declining. According to a recent World Population Policy Report, India’s total fertility rate (TFR) has dropped to 1.9, even as the country’s population is projected to reach 1.46 billion by the end of 2025.

Declining Birth Rates in Southern India

The 2022 Civil Registration System (CRS) report sheds light on where most births are occurring. The study reveals that southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh are witnessing significantly slower population growth.

The birth registration numbers from 2022 show:

  • Tamil Nadu: 940,000 births
  • Karnataka: 1.04 million births
  • Andhra Pradesh: 750,000 births
  • Telangana: 700,000 births
  • Kerala: Only 440,000 births

This data highlights the south’s trend toward lower fertility and population stabilization, driven by better healthcare, education, and family planning initiatives.

Northern States Lead in Childbirths

In contrast, northern and central Indian states continue to report high birth numbers. In 2022 alone:

  • Uttar Pradesh led the country with 5.44 million registered births
  • Bihar followed with 3.07 million births
  • Maharashtra recorded 1.92 million births
  • Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh also showed growth in birth registration

These states contribute a significant share to India’s annual birth count, and unlike the south, their fertility rates remain well above the national average.

Uttar Pradesh Tops the Charts

Uttar Pradesh remains the state with the highest number of births, and its figures have risen by nearly 40% since 2013. Bihar also saw a rapid increase, with the number of births almost doubling over the past decade.

While Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have shown steady but moderate growth, Maharashtra has remained relatively stable with minor fluctuations. However, Maharashtra continues to maintain a consistently high fertility rate compared to southern states.

Conclusion: A Tale of Two Indias

The data underscores a clear demographic divide:

  • Southern states are moving toward population stabilization with fewer births and lower fertility rates
  • Northern states continue to contribute heavily to India’s birth count, with higher population growth trends

As India navigates its future demographic challenges, understanding these regional differences is key to planning for healthcare, education, housing, and employment in a balanced and sustainable manner.
