New rule implemented regarding Aadhaar card: Difficulties increased for those holding two Aadhaar cards

New Delhi, 7 August 2025 — The Government of India has today implemented a new rule related to Aadhaar card, which should alert crores of people. If you already have an Aadhaar card or you are thinking of getting a new Aadhaar, then this news is very important for you.

Strictness on those holding two Aadhaar cards

The government has clarified that a person should have only one Aadhaar card. People who have two Aadhaar cards—whether intentionally made for fraud or by mistake—may now face legal action.

Those holding two Aadhaar cards are being declared illegal. If caught, there can be a heavy fine and even a jail sentence. The government has warned that such additional Aadhaar cards should be immediately handed over to the government agency.

Documents required to get Aadhaar card

UIDAI has made the following documents mandatory for getting Aadhaar card under the new rules:

Required Documents Purpose

Birth Certificate Age Verification
Ration Card Residence Proof
PAN Card Identity Proof
Driving License Alternate Identification

Without these documents, it will no longer be possible to get an Aadhaar card. Also, clarity and validity of the documents is also important—documents with blurred photos or incomplete information will be rejected.

It is important to update the old Aadhaar

UIDAI has also directed that people whose Aadhaar card is older than 10 years should update it immediately. Especially if Aadhaar was made before the age of 15, re-verification through identity card is mandatory.

Online update facility

Now Aadhaar card details like address, mobile number, email etc. can be updated online:

  • UIDAI’s official website
  • mAadhaar mobile app

However, to get biometric information updated, you will have to visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Tips for common citizens

If you have two Aadhaar cards, surrender one immediately. Keep your Aadhaar linked to the mobile number so that services like OTP are available smoothly. Do not share Aadhaar details and OTP with anyone.
