A new dispute has emerged in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, concerning illegal occupation of municipal land. In Chandausi, the Muslim community has reportedly occupied six bighas of government land, constructing a mosque and more than 45 unauthorized houses. Upon receiving information about the encroachment, the local administration launched an investigation.
Tehsildar Dhirendra Pratap Singh, who led the inquiry, confirmed the illegal occupation of municipal land. The case has been traced to Waris Nagar in the Chandausi police station area.
Ongoing Mosque Dispute in Sambhal
This incident adds to an ongoing controversy surrounding a mosque dispute in Sambhal. Hindu community leaders have already filed a petition in court regarding the Shahi Jama Masjid, claiming historical rights over the site.
The mosque has been surveyed twice as part of legal proceedings. Additionally, the Muslim community had submitted a request to paint the mosque, which was opposed by Hindu groups. The Hindu side alleged that this was an attempt to alter the structure under the pretext of painting.
ASI’s Stand on the Dispute
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) reviewed the matter and informed the court that painting the mosque was not necessary at this stage, but cleaning could be carried out. The ASI’s rejection of the Muslim side’s request has intensified tensions in the region.
Historical Sites Discovered Amid Mosque Dispute
Since the dispute over the Sambhal mosque began, several historical sites, including stepwells, temples, and ancient wells, have been discovered in different areas of the district. Authorities have started preserving these sites as potential heritage landmarks.
Violence and Arrests Following Mosque Survey
The second survey of the mosque triggered violent clashes, leading to the death of four people. Law enforcement swiftly took action, arresting multiple individuals linked to the riots. The situation remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments to prevent further unrest.
This dispute is now being closely followed as legal proceedings continue, shaping the future of religious and historical claims in the district.
