Important ATM Card Rules You Must Know

If you own an ATM card, it’s crucial to stay updated with the latest regulations. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced new rules that could result in your ATM card being deactivated in certain situations. Additionally, if you lose your card, blocking it immediately is necessary to safeguard your account balance from unauthorized transactions.

ATM Card Expiry Date

Every ATM card has a specific validity period. Once this period ends, the card automatically stops functioning. In such a case, you must visit your bank to request a new ATM card to continue hassle-free transactions.

RBI’s New Rules for ATM Card Deactivation

The RBI has implemented fresh guidelines regarding ATM card usage. According to these rules, if your bank account is not linked to a registered mobile number, your ATM card could be disabled.

For instance, customers of Bank of India must ensure their mobile number is linked to their bank account before October 31, 2025. Failing to do so will result in their ATM cards becoming inactive.

Without a registered mobile number, neither online payments nor ATM withdrawals will be possible.

Immediate Blocking of Lost ATM Cards

If you misplace your ATM card, blocking it at the earliest is essential to prevent unauthorized transactions and fraud.

How to Block Your ATM Card via SMS

State Bank of India (SBI) customers can easily block their lost ATM cards through SMS:

  1. Type “BLOCK XXXX” (where “XXXX” represents the last four digits of your ATM card).
  2. Send the SMS to 567676 from your registered mobile number.
  3. You will receive an SMS confirmation once your ATM card is successfully blocked.

How to Block Your ATM Card via IVR

If you prefer to block your ATM card via an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, follow these steps:

  1. Dial SBI’s toll-free number 1800-112-211 from your registered mobile number.
  2. Press “0”, then press “1” to proceed.
  3. Enter the last five digits of your ATM card when prompted.
  4. Press “1” to confirm.
  5. Your ATM card will be blocked, and a confirmation message will be sent to you via SMS.

Stay Safe and Keep Your ATM Card Secure

To avoid any inconvenience or financial loss, ensure that your mobile number is linked to your bank account before October 31, 2025 (especially if you are a Bank of India customer). Additionally, in case of loss or theft, block your ATM card immediately to prevent fraud. By staying alert and informed, you can protect your finances and enjoy seamless banking services.
