Massive unrest has broken out in Sindh province, Pakistan, over a controversial canal project, leading to widespread protests and violent clashes. The situation escalated to such an extent that on Tuesday, May 20, angry demonstrators set fire to the home of Sindh’s Interior Minister, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar. Security guards posted at his residence were also reportedly assaulted by the mob.
According to Geo News, violence flared up in the Naushahro Feroze district, where police clashed with activists from a nationalist group. The confrontation resulted in the death of at least two protestors, with several others injured.
Protest Sparked by Suspended Canal Project
The protests stem from opposition to a proposed canal on the Indus River, a project that had already been put on hold by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) on April 28, pending consensus among provinces. Despite the suspension, tensions have continued to mount, especially in Sindh, where the plan is seen as a threat to regional water rights.
The latest unrest began when nationalist activists attempted to block a national highway in protest. Clashes broke out when police intervened, sparking chaos in the region.
Interior Minister Confirms Attack, Orders Police Action
The fire at Minister Lanjar’s residence was so intense it was visible from a distance. In a statement, Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar confirmed the attack and vowed strict action against those undermining law and order. He has instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Naushahro Feroze to submit a full report and take immediate steps to stabilize the situation.
In addition to torching the minister’s home, protestors reportedly blocked the national highway, looted fertilizer bags from passing trailers, and triggered further disruption. As a result, additional police forces have been deployed to the area to restore control.

PPP Takes a Strong Stand Against the Project
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which has deep roots in Sindh, has strongly opposed the canal project. Party leaders argue that the plan would divert Sindh’s rightful share of Indus waters to benefit regions like Cholistan, calling it an unacceptable move against the province’s interests.
PPP officials have branded the canal scheme as an attack on Sindh’s autonomy and resources, stating they will resist any attempt to move forward with the project.
Background: A ₹211 Billion Project on Hold
The canal in question, estimated to cost 211 billion Pakistani rupees, has drawn significant backlash not only from political parties like the PPP but also from local communities. The project was officially suspended by the CCI amid rising inter-provincial disagreement, but the tension on the ground continues to boil over.
