Despite the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision to withdraw ₹2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation nearly two years ago, notes worth ₹6,266 crore are still in circulation. This data was revealed in the RBI’s latest update.
₹2,000 Notes Still Hold Legal Tender Status
The RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023. However, these notes continue to remain legal tender, meaning they can still be used for transactions.
In a statement released on Friday, the central bank reported that as of April 30, 2025, ₹2,000 denomination banknotes with a total value of ₹6,266 crore were still in circulation.
Over 98% of ₹2,000 Notes Have Returned to the System
At the time of the withdrawal announcement in May 2023, the total value of ₹2,000 notes in circulation stood at ₹3.56 lakh crore. The RBI noted that since then, 98.24% of these notes have been returned, leaving just a fraction still outside the banking system.
Exchange and Deposit Deadlines Ended in 2023
The facility to deposit or exchange ₹2,000 notes at all bank branches was available until October 7, 2023. Following this period, RBI designated 19 of its regional issue offices across India to continue accepting these notes for exchange.
Deposit via Post Still an Option
Even now, individuals and businesses can send ₹2,000 notes through India Post to any RBI issue office for deposit into their bank accounts. This initiative has been in effect since October 9, 2023, and offers a convenient method for those who still possess these notes to legalize and deposit them without visiting an RBI office directly.
