The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced significant updates to the FASTag system, which have been enforced starting February 17, 2025. These changes aim to streamline toll collection, encourage digital transactions, and prevent fraudulent activities at toll plazas.
Understanding FASTag
FASTag is an automated toll payment system that operates using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It is affixed to a vehicle’s windshield, enabling seamless toll fee deductions as the vehicle passes through a toll plaza. This system minimizes waiting time and helps reduce congestion at toll booths.
Key Changes in FASTag Regulations
Double Toll Fee for Blacklisted FASTags
If a FASTag is blacklisted, toll payments will not be processed, even if recharged within 60 minutes before or 10 minutes after reaching the toll plaza. As a result, the vehicle owner will have to pay double the toll amount.
Mandatory KYC Updates
FASTag users must now update their KYC details every three years to keep their accounts active and secure. This measure will help reduce fraudulent transactions.
Replacement of FASTags Older Than Five Years
To prevent technical glitches and ensure smooth toll payments, FASTags that have been in use for more than five years must be replaced.
Time-Bound Payment System
If a toll fee is deducted more than 15 minutes after the vehicle has crossed the toll plaza, the transaction will be flagged as suspicious. This could lead to penalties or blacklisting of the FASTag.
70-Minute Correction Window
FASTag users will have a 70-minute window to resolve any issues with their FASTag status—60 minutes before and 10 minutes after passing through the toll plaza.
Updated Chargeback Process
Banks will now only accept chargeback requests for incorrect deductions related to blacklisted or low-balance FASTags after a 15-day period.
How to Avoid FASTag Blacklisting?
To ensure the smooth functioning of FASTag, users should:
- Maintain a sufficient balance in their FASTag account.
- Update KYC details on time.
- Ensure vehicle registration information is accurate.
- Replace FASTags that are more than five years old.
Impact of the New FASTag Rules
These updated FASTag regulations will significantly reduce long queues at toll plazas, promote digital transactions, and prevent fraudulent activities. Additionally, the improved system will ensure transparency and efficiency in toll payments.
By adhering to these new FASTag rules, drivers can enjoy a hassle-free toll payment experience, making their journeys more convenient and efficient.
