India’s neighboring country, Sri Lanka, is once again grappling with a power outage. However, unlike previous instances linked to energy shortages, this time the reason is rather unusual—a monkey. According to reports, a monkey entered Sri Lanka’s power grid substation at around 11:30 AM, triggering a massive blackout across the island. Even after four hours, power had not been fully restored.
Government’s Response to the Power Crisis
Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister, Kumara Jayakody, addressed the situation, stating that a monkey came into contact with the grid transformer in a South Colombo suburb, causing a severe disruption in the power system. The minister assured that engineers were working tirelessly to restore electricity as soon as possible. The government remains hopeful that full restoration will be achieved soon.
Partial Power Restoration Underway
According to reports, electricity has been restored in some areas, while other regions continue to face disruptions. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has issued a public notice regarding the issue. The board confirmed that efforts are being made to restore power across the country and apologized for the inconvenience caused to citizens. However, the official statement did not disclose the specific cause of the incident.
Patience Requested as Repairs Continue
Authorities have urged the public to remain patient while engineers work diligently to fix the problem. Although some areas have regained power, there is no official estimate on when the electricity supply will be fully restored nationwide. The incident highlights the vulnerabilities of power grids and the unexpected impact wildlife interference can have on essential services.
